Mallet finger refers to injury of the extensor tendon at the distal interphalangeal joint. It occurs when an extended finger is forcibly flexed (e.g., finger hit head on with volleyball). The finger remains flexed and cannot be actively extended. In uncomplicated injuries, the distal interphalangeal joint is splinted in extension for 6 to 8 weeks.
